Young M.A. Reflects On Substance Abuse In New Freestyle + Artists Embrace A Sober Lifestyle

Young M.A

Young M.A. is making headlines again. In her latest music video for “Open Scars,” the New York rapper revealed a major personal revelation – she’s no longer drinking or doing drugs. In addition, SOHH highlights other artists, such as Ari Lennox, who have been embracing sobriety.

‘Open Scars’

The “Ooouuu” rapper’s new music video, “Open Scars,” released on Saturday, Dec. 9, has gone viral on social media, as she revealed her decision to leave behind her addiction to alcohol and drugs. “Open Scars,” also reveals her health scare, suggesting that her addiction was connected to her health issues. In the song, the lyrics go:

“For the past three years, I let my fans down; I lost faith, and I couldn’t understand how; I had to go and free my mind and let my hair down; Without Henny, I see everything clear now.”

In March 2023, fans spotted Young M.A. in a video, raising health concerns for the rapper. In response to fans’ worries about her health, she issued a statement explaining that she had been hospitalized due to personal health issues and was on a “path of recovery.”

Fans were ecstatic to witness the rapper’s comeback, with many expressing their support and admiration for her brave choice.

One fan named @DaKidGowie wrote, “M.A. will always be tough. I’m glad she’s choosing sobriety.” Another fan named, @WeeshbBeng wrote, “She just telling HerStory! I hope she come back stronger.”

Artists Embrace Sobriety

This revelation from Young M.A. comes in the wake of other artists speaking out about their struggles with substance abuse.

Nicki Minaj, in a recent interview with Vogue, opened up about her addiction to Percocet, which was originally prescribed to help with severe menstrual cramps. Minaj emphasized:

“No one told me that this was a narcotic and this was addictive. Luckily I was able to ground myself. But — once an addict, always an addict. I feel like if you’ve ever experienced addiction to anything, which I have, you always have to think twice and three times about the choices that you make.”

Ari Lennox also shared her battle with alcoholism, celebrating her 7-month sobriety milestone in July 2023. The R&B singer expressed how sobriety has brought positive changes to her life.

Blac Chyna Celebrates 1-Year of Sobriety

The conversation surrounding sobriety in the music industry has gained traction recently, and it’s not just confined to rappers. In September 2023, Blac Chyna, now Angela White, appeared on the Tamron Hall Show alongside her mother, Tokyo Toni, to celebrate her one-year sobriety journey.

Young M.A & Her Barber React To Fans’ Concerns Over Video

Fans have noticed for some time that Young M.A has been missing from the spotlight. There was a time when the Brooklyn rapper was beasting her way through the industry, but there has been a lull. Her last album, Off The Yak, was dropped off in 2021, and Young M.A returned in October 2022 with a single. However, that’s about all fans have seen from the rapper, as her Instagram page has also been wiped clean.

Rumors about M.A have run rampant, even before her mysterious break from the mainstream. People speculated about her health, and there was gossip about her entering recovery, but those conversations dissipated as quickly as they began. A new video has surfaced and has the public talking once again; this time, Young M.A reacted to people who thrust her name into controversy.

Young M.A Appears In Barber’s Video

It was supposed to be a simple video that showed a before and after of Young M.A getting her hair done. The rapper was seen sitting in a barber’s chair, and people noticed her eyes looked yellow. Soon, social media users began firing off diagnoses, questioning whether the rapper had jaundice. Additionally, the barber who recorded and posted the clip also found themselves at the heart of criticism. People accused them of purposefully trying to make Young M.A look bad. The barber and the rapper reacted to the attention.

“Y’all got so much to say as if I’m trying to embarrass my dawg,” the barber wrote. “She reposted my video if she didn’t want me to record she would have told me. Y’all don’t know our bond nor our friendship. What y’all need to do is just send your prayers for her and that’s that. She didn’t have a haircut in a month and she wanted me to bring her haircut back to life which I did!!!!!

Rapper Stands By Her Friend

Further, Young M.A reposted her barber’s reaction and added a brief response. “We blessed don’t let that get to u blooda,” she said. “And I told you it was like 4 months [crying laughing emoji].” Fans were happy to see she was in good spirits. However, Young M.A did not address any concerns about her health. Check it out above.
